How Steven Soderbergh successful No more Sudden Move – as told by Brendan Fraser, Don Cheadle, and more

Like-minded Netflix's Malcolm and Marie, Ben Wheatley's In the Globe, and Doug Liman's Locked Down, Steven Soderbergh's latest crime caper, No Sudden Make a motion, will forever hold a unique point in cinematic history – it was filmed entirely during the COVID-19 pandemic. Cameras started rolling connected the period thriller in September 2021, production having originally been scheduled for April that same year.

Soderbergh was one of the filmmakers behind the safety protocols initiated by the Directors Guild of America [DGA], allowing production to continue safely during the roiled period. No Sudden Move was realized by the throw away and crew, without motion-picture photography having to follow paused Oregon production shut down, in November 2021.

The experience of qualification No Sudden Move back was, unsurprisingly, very different from a normal film set. Masks and social distancing led to a strange atmosphere – but not an wholly negative one. "We became a peck more concerned and appressed to one some other, although elite distancing was in place," says Brendan Fraser, who appears in the movie as a character with a same Orwellian feel.

Over Zoom along, GamesRadar+ and Total Flic caught up with the mammoth cast of No Sudden Move – now available digitally in the UK – about the making of the movie and working with Soderbergh. And in case Fraser wasn't already a big enough pull down, otherwise cast members let in Soderbergh stalwarts Don Cheadle and Bill Duke, Unknown Things' David Harbour, Uncut Gems break Julia Fox, Sicario's Benicio Del Toro, A Quiet Place's Noah Jupe, Upstream Gloss's Amy Seimetz, and Goodfellas' Ray Liotta. Phew.

Don River Cheadle: We shot this in Detroit, Michigan, and the numbers [of COVID cases] were releas off. The numbers racket were kind of scary. But Steven was one of the co-authors of the protocols for the DGA [Directors Guild of America], and we had a heavy epidemiology team from Mad Anthony Wayne Put forward University that he as wel worked with on Contagion. So we finally felt safe. And believe is something that we had to really swear on, not just on the set when having scene partners, merely when you went home, we had to trust that everybody was happening their best behavior and weren't being carefree off set, and then approach back and possibly exposing the mold to everything. We were in a eruct, and everybody had each other's rearmost.

This is a motion picture that started in April [2020] that had to get pushed for months and it looked like-minded it wasn't going to happen at some points. Indeed nobody was going to come back and jockey information technology up. And we got through the whole affair without having to shut fallen and came come out with something that's, I think, really entertaining and fun and smart and all the things that you desire a pic to be and that's all a Testament to Steven's leadership.

Brendan Fraser: Well, gosh, clearly a set of safety protocols are in place to keep everyone healthy and advantageously, including wearing masks when non on tv camera. The realization that the on-screen talent who weren't erosion the masks are in reality the ones who were vulnerable at the time that we were doing this, interestingly, we became a peck many concerned and near to 1 another, although social distancing was in place. I remember information technology shows in this movie, there's a good deal of care and concern that went into making convinced that we did this safely and did it right and straight up with Steven Soderbergh directive this movie in this music genre, it works gangbusters.

Julia Fox: Because of all the COVID restrictions, we didn't really have a lot of time to practice together Oregon read lines. That was non really happening. It was like: have to set ahead, run for the lines really quickly, and and then wing it and see it out as we went, and then we would change something, try things out. Only that was all happening on set with the cameras connected. It was very efficient, though. We were very in and out.

David Harbour: I found it rattling different [to a normal picture adjust]. I mean, a great deal of the great things about film sets are that there's a personal nature to it – a great deal of people doing of import labor, running over to the monitor, checking forbidden a shot, slapping each other happening the back. Even in a scene, hardly doing stuff where you'Ra physical and I'm a physical actor. And then to accept that be immediately... Every prison term I would get close to individual, even in a panoram, I would think about [COVID]. It fair-and-square intersectant my mind, like droplets, and things like that. And so it added some other complexity to the work, which I wasn't crazy well-nig. Merely it was different.

Noah Jupe: When you have masses like-minded this cast in a room, all on the job together, by the third day we were all chatting, we were very social. Thither's a trustfulness betwixt everyone and that allows you to sense relaxed and then that allows you to embody more connected in the scene. The happier and more joyful a coif is, the better performance you're expiration to get. I put on't know if that's an genuine thing, merely IT in spades felt like this one.

Amy Seimetz: I remember, in a scene when I hugged [Noah], we had to hold that hug for a really years to get the camera focus right. And because it was COVID, not only was it very strange to evenhanded be hugging him while they're checking focus on us, because I hadn't hugged anyone isolated from my boyfriend for goodby. Even happening set, everyone has masks, and you'Ra utilized to this camaraderie where, at the ending of the day, you would embrace your blighter actor. And you just don't suffice that. Noah Jupe (giggling): It was way to a fault long as well.

Benicio Del Toro: I've always said, 'The better the actor is that you're working with, the better you will live.' There's only a total respect and trust that happens. And I think that that's besides a testament to Steven because He creates that space so you can trust. It's that trust that happens with seasoned actors. When we work with younger masses, you want to work them – because the better they are, the better you will follow.

Julia Fox: The atmosphere was done for us with the set plan. Everything really felt so authentic and from the '50s. You just directly entered that universe. It was really beautiful easy to transition in and out because it felt so real.

Don Cheadle: Even with all of that protocols and the intensity from that, [Soderbergh] was able to steer the skim like he always does. We didn't crash, we move flying, and the film doesn't suffer as a result. He's definitely on his game and you feel in truth comfortable when you know that you're working with somebody who's as assured, A clear as he is, and can still make space for United States of America. That's a big shot.

Bill Duke: Introductory of all, Steven knows how to work with actors. Number two, he doesn't waste time.

Brendan Fraser: Atomic number 2's quick!

Bill Duke: Helium's not waiting for the right sunset, if you recognise what I'm saying. And when He shoots, you advisable be at the ready, because information technology could be one claim, no more than deuce. And looking at his efficiency, he doesn't only direct, sometimes helium actually is the factual film director of photography. He's a wardrobe guy, maybe he'll straighten your tie or whatever, he's totally engaged and devoted to what he's doing. And that's what's special about him.

Ray Liotta: Atomic number 2's right rising there [with the best directors I've worked with]. He really knows what he wants to do. He knows the television camera, where you're gonna put information technology. It's wholly emended in his head. Because sometimes, directors usually do a long shot, close up, mid-shot. And this nonpareil, he just knew what he wanted. And so he was ready to move connected. He saw the movie in his head to begin with. Soh, he's right up there with the best.
